Residents of two Batangas towns are displaced by the restless Taal Volcano.

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and its local government counterparts in the Calabarzon Region is closely monitoring the unrest at the Taal Volcano and have evacuated residents in case of stronger eruptions.

On Saturday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) upgraded the volcano’s alert level from Alert 2 (increasing unrest) to Alert 3 (magmatic unrest) due to magmatic intrusion at the main crater, which could fuel subsequent eruptions.

As of 11 a.m. Saturday, 160 families from Agoncillo town, consisting of 800 to 900 individuals, had been evacuated, as had 81 families or 222 individuals from the municipality of Laurel, according to an NDRRMC news release.

Government agencies and uniformed services are also assisting affected communities through response actions.

The provincial government and Department of Social Welfare and Development are preparing additional supplies of family food packs to supplement the relief efforts of affected local government units, as well as vehicles to assist with evacuation efforts.

Residents in affected areas are urged to exercise caution, take precautions, and heed authorities’ warnings and advisories.

Dr. Ma. Antonia Bornas, chief of Phivolcs’ Volcano Monitoring and Eruption Prediction Division, reported that at approximately 7 a.m., the Taal Volcano’s main crater generated a brief phreatomagmatic burst, followed by a nearly continuous phreatomagmatic activity that generated plumes 1,500 meters in height, accompanied by volcanic earthquake and infrasound signals.

Regional Director of the Office of Civil Defense Maria Theresa Escolano reported that the regional DRRMC has been coordinating with affected area mayors regarding situation updates, response actions such as evacuation, and resource augmentation if the volcano unrest continues.

Phivolcs identified Barangays Bilibinwang and Banyaga in the municipality of Agoncillo, and Boso-boso in the municipality of Gulod, as well as the eastern portion of Barangay Bugaan East of Laurel, as high-risk areas.
