France, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates discuss ways to diversify Europe’s energy supplies.
PARIS France met with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday to discuss ways to diversify Europe’s energy supplies and reduce the continent’s reliance on Russia.
Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian stressed the importance of coordination with the two Gulf states during a phone call with Saudi and UAE counterparts Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan, respectively, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
He emphasized the “need for a robust international mobilization, in all forums and under all circumstances, in response to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, which poses a grave threat to European security,” according to the statement.
Le Drian is also scheduled to visit Qatar next week, where he will discuss energy diversification, according to BFMTV.
Doha is one of the top three exporters of liquefied natural gas in the world (LNG).
France is also considering building a floating LNG terminal in the port of Le Havre to expand its LNG landing capacity and reduce its reliance on Russian gas, according to the French news daily Les Echos on Saturday.
Russia is the European Union’s largest supplier of crude oil, natural gas, and solid fossil fuels.
Energy supply stability is jeopardized as a result of the sanctions imposed on Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
France has declared the goal of achieving energy independence for the EU in the coming decade, which can be accomplished by diversifying oil and gas supplies and sources.
In response to international pressure and sanctions, TotalEnergies, a French multinational oil, and gas company announced last Tuesday that it would suspend business with Russia and instead import petroleum products from Saudi Arabia.
