Candidates can keep an eye out for potential violations by rivals: Comelec
MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) urged candidates on Monday to monitor their opponents’ activities for possible election violations.
“It would be prudent to keep an eye on your competition, your potential rivals for the position. If they commit any violations, please notify us and we will take appropriate action “Commissioner George Erwin Garcia stated during a briefing at Laging Handa.
Garcia’s remarks came as local candidates officially began their election campaigns on March 25, with local elections widely regarded as more competitive than national elections.
He added that this is also a method of intercepting vote-buying – whether in cash or kind.
“Certain individuals may be avoiding direct cash distribution. However, these are occasionally distributed via GCash or Paymaya (digital wallets) or other means. Some do so via cards, claiming that recipients are members of particular organizations or whatever “Garcia continued.
Meanwhile, he pleaded with the public to report violations of campaign rules.
“We are able to investigate your complaints, including those made via social media. We are not blind or deaf to such ground realities. We’ve begun endorsing reports submitted by our field personnel. They will soon submit reports to us “Additionally, the poll body official stated.
On the other hand, the Comelec is scheduled to convene an interagency task force on vote-buying on Wednesday.
The “Task Force Kontra Bigay” will be tasked with conducting an independent investigation into allegations of vote-buying.
Representatives from the Department of Justice, the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission, the Department of Interior and Local Government, the Philippine Information Agency, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Philippine National Police, and the Armed Forces of the Philippines will comprise the group.
Meanwhile, Garcia stated that they will work to have the gun ban exemption and security application guidelines reviewed and recalibrated.
“Our objective here is to eliminate all administrative red tape that slows down the process,” he explained.
The judiciary, prosecutorial service, Public Attorney’s Office lawyers, government personnel performing sensitive duties, Comelec field personnel, businessmen, security agencies, and individuals with credible threat assessments will benefit from the system overhaul.
He added that they will decentralize application filing and processing to their regional offices in light of the improved coronavirus situation in the country.
