MRT-3 now has four-car trains.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” Following the completion of the line’s substantial restoration under the Duterte administration, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) began operating four-car trains on Monday, as well as a month-long free travel campaign.

In the MRT-3’s revenue line, two four-car trains have been operational and run concurrently with the three-car trains.

MRT-3 Officer-in-Charge General Manager Michael Capati stated in a statement that the four-car trains would run during peak hoursโ€”starting at 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectivelyโ€”and are intended to increase the MRT-3’s passenger capacity.

He pointed out that each MRT-3 CKD train car produced in Czechoslovakia can accommodate up to 394 passengersโ€”1,182 passengers every three-car train and 1,576 passengers per four-car train.

He claims that at any given time, an average of 18 to 22 trainsโ€”including four-car trainsโ€”are running on the MRT-3’s revenue line.

“Malayong-malayo po yung ngayon sa napapatakbo natin noon na 10 โ€“ 15 tren lang, at may all-time low pa na anim na tren,” Capati remarked.

On May 24, 2015, the MRT-3 reported six running train sets on its mainline, an “all-time low” for the rail service, which was attributed to the MRT-3’s former maintenance provider’s “poor maintenance.”

He claims that 48 of the 72 CKD train cars have been rebuilt so far, assuring that the MRT-3 has enough trains to run.

He claims that with the installation of new air conditioning equipment as part of the MRT-3’s “major” restoration, the trains are now faster and cooler.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said during the opening of the MRT-3 restoration project last week that the MRT-3 will be free to the public from March 28 to April 30 throughout all operating hours.

He explained that the free trip initiative is intended to relieve passengers’ financial burdens in the face of rising fuel and other commodity prices.
