DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The popular Roxas Night Market’s first three days have been “orderly and manageable,” according to the chief of the Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC).

PSSCC Executive Director Angel Sumagaysay stated that since the city’s main night market reopened on March 24, they had received positive comments from market-goers on the ground.

“The first five days of operation were smooth and efficient. We can see that the Dabawenyos missed the night market because there were so many people, but the security and safety cluster can still manage the foot traffic “In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, Sumagaysay stated.

Around 200 soldiers, police officers, and civilian security personnel have been deployed to ensure the security of the area.

Col. Darren Comia, commander of Task Force Davao (TFD), said that precautions are being put in place to prevent situations like the explosion on Sept. 2, 2016, which killed 17 people.

The municipal government’s economic recovery efforts, as mentioned by the Davao Coronavirus Disease 2019 Task Force, include the reopening of the night market.

This year, at least 286 food, ready-to-wear, accessories, and massage therapists have been granted permission to operate for three months.

There are 56 food vendors, 65 ready-to-wear dealers, 100 massage therapists, and 65 accessory sellers total.

Those who won spaces for the March 24 to June 24 period can return in 2023 and enter the raffle again, according to Celerino Eralino, director of the city’s economic enterprise office.

Those who obtain spots for July to September and October to December this year would go through the same process, he said.
