The alert level in Taal remains at three; de-escalation is possible in two weeks.
MANILA – The Taal Volcano warning status is anticipated to stay at Level 3 (magmatic unrest) for the next two weeks, but it could be decreased if volcanic activity continues to decline without any explosions.
“The alert level 3 status might be maintained for the time being. We could de-escalate the alert status within two weeks if (volcanic activity) continues to decline starting today and there are no explosions “Renato Solidum Jr., director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), told President Rodrigo Duterte during his Tuesday night Talk to the People.
In January 2020, July 2021, and last Saturday, March 26, the Taal Volcano erupted.
“When we compare the eruption in January 2020 to the one last Saturday, we can see that the latter was far smaller. The eruption column reached a height of 16 kilometers in 2020, compared to 3 kilometers (tall) last Saturday “he stated
During an explosive volcanic eruption, volcanic plumes are columns of hot volcanic ash and gas ejected into the atmosphere. The height of the plume pouring out of the crater indicates a lesser eruption.
The Taal Volcano’s alert level was raised from Level 2 (growing unrest) to Level 3 on Saturday, indicating that magma extruding from the main crater might cause explosive eruptions.
“We urged evacuation from the barangays of Agoncillo, Banyaga, Bilibinwang, Laurel, Boso-Boso, Gulod, and the eastern section of Bugaan East,” Solidum added, noting that these are the places most likely to be affected if the volcano erupts more violently.
Meanwhile, Solidum warned that the volcano’s sulfur dioxide emissions are hazardous to one’s health.
People should stay indoors, avoid opening windows and doors, use wet curtains, and wear face masks, according to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, who was also in the President’s conversation.
Prepare a medicine supply for asthma and other allergies that ash fall could aggravate, according to Duque.
The health commissioner also recommended wearing protective goggles and not wearing contact lenses. He added that food safety should be assured by carefully washing it and that drinking water should be sealed.
