MANILA – Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso, the standard-bearer of Aksyon Demoratiko, believes that natural gas in the Mindanao region could be the answer to the country’s fuel crisis.

Domagoso claimed the Liguasan Marsh in Maguindanao might enable the country to gain steady fuel supplies and so become self-sufficient in terms of fuel products in an ambush interview during his campaign sortie in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro on Thursday.

He pointed out that the current cost of fuel and petroleum products is so high that it is already affecting product transit from one location to another.

“I think Mindanao is the solution to the country’s problem with regard to, sa kinakailangan nating source of energy, kasi yung Liguasan Marsh ay napatunayan na na merong methane at ito’y pwedeng hanguin at ito’y pwedeng hanguin at merong pag aaral na pweden

Domagoso promised to develop the natural gas deposit in Liguasan Marsh during his visit to Iligan on Wednesday.

According to a government survey, the area beneath Lake Buluan in Maguindanao’s Liguasan Marsh holds 68 billion cubic feet of gas valued at least USD1 billion or PHP52 billion.

If more digging or exploration is done, it is thought to hold oil and coal.

According to Domagoso, the Liguasan Marsh might rescue the country’s fuel supply, especially if a crisis or disaster occurs, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict or an oil plant explosion in the Middle East.

He claims that the first investment of PHP2 billion is required to explore the Liguasan Marsh and determine how much natural gas, and maybe oil, is deposited beneath the 220,000-hectare marsh that straddles the provinces of Maguindanao, North Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat.
