OFW PRRD programs will be continued and intensified by UniTeam.
MANILA – UniTeam standard-bearer Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and his running mate, Sara Duterte, will continue and expand all programs for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) launched by President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration.
Marcos said the incoming administration needs to appropriately commemorate the accomplishments of the country’s modern-day heroes during the UniTeam’s online miting de avance (advanced meeting) with OFWs on Friday night.
He stated that the government should always compensate OFWs for their sacrifices.
“Kaya kami sa UniTeam, marami kaming iniisip na plano upang bigyan ng mas magandang buhay pa ang ating mga kababayan na nagtatrabaho sa (That is why the UniTeam has many plans to provide far better lifestyles for our countrymen working) abroad,” Marcos added.
Meanwhile, Sara Duterte stated that more one-stop-shop centers for OFWs will be established across the country.
“Kabilang sa UniTeam campaign ang pagpapatuloy sa mga magandang programa ni Pangulong Duterte, kabilang na dyan ang mahabang listahan ng programang ipinapatupad para sa mga OFW at sa kanilang mga pamilya,” Sara Duterte stated.
The UniTeam will also expand its livelihood training and development aid programs for returning OFWs and their families, as well as for undocumented OFWs.
“Of course, we look forward to the Department of Migrant Workers’ operations,” she added. “Matagal na itong hinintay ng ating mga (Our OFWs have been waiting for this for a long time).”
In December 2021, President Duterte signed Republic Act 11641, which established the Department of Migrant Workers to address migrant workers’ rights and concerns.
According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, the new agency could begin operations in 2023. (POEA).
In a January Laging Handa briefing, POEA chief Bernard Olalia said, “They have a so-called transition period, two years have been allowed by law for the movement of agencies to the new Department of Migrant Workers, and during this transition period, a transition committee will be constituted.”
The committee, which will be made up of officials from the POEA, the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Undersecretary for Migrant Workers’ Affairs, the Department of Labor and Employment’s Philippine Overseas Labor Office, National Reintegration Center for OFWs, and National Maritime Polytechnic, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Office of National Social Welfare Attaché, will submit a budget proposal for the department.
Assurance of funds
Harry Roque, a UniTeam senatorial candidate, promised that if elected, he will ensure that the Department of Migrant Workers has adequate funding, employees, and effective implementing rules and regulations.
Roque said that he had also worked overseas twice and that her mother had spent four years working outside the nation, departing when he was only 12 years old.
“Hanggang ako po mismo ay nagtrabaho sa abroad, hindi ko po naintindihan bakit nagawa ng nanay ko’yun. Mas masakit sa isang magulang na mawalay sa mga anak (Until I became an OFW myself, I couldn’t understand why she had to go.) “I understood it’s more difficult for parents to leave their children behind),” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Lives that are better
Sara Duterte has stated that she will personally fight for a large-scale livelihood program to encourage Filipinos to stay and work in the Philippines rather than seek a better life elsewhere.
“Naniniwala ako na kung mayroon na sapat na trabaho sa ating bansa, mas pipiliin ng mga Pilipino na manatili dito kaysa makipagsapalaran sa ibang bansa (I believe that if our country provides enough livelihood, Filipinos will prefer to stay here rather than risk their lives in other countries “she continued.
Likewise, the outgoing mayor of Davao City would advocate for better education for Filipino youngsters, so that “they can be pushed further to become productive citizens in the country.”
“Ang dekalidad na edukasyon kakambal ng magandang trabaho,” she added.
She stated that she will investigate OFW protection wherever they move in the world.
“Sisiguraduhin natin na ang lahat ng OFW ay nakakatanggap ng tamang sweldo at benepisyo mula kanilang employer at nabibigyan sila ng proteksyon laban sa abuso (I will make sure that all OFWs get the right compensation and benefits from their employers and are provided with protection against abuses),” Sara Du
Marcos and Duterte both promised to fight for retraining programs for returning OFWs who have been affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.
For this year’s elections, 1,697,215 Filipinos living overseas have registered. The overseas voting period will take place from April 10 through May 9.
Only national candidates will be voted for: president, vice president, 12 senators, and a party-list group.
