Senatorial candidate fights for the welfare of OFWs and their families.

MANILA โ€“ Employers who refuse to comply with the mandated insurance for agency-employed, directly hired, and returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), according to a senatorial contender, should face harsher fines.

Guillermo Eleazar, the former chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), has promised to improve the welfare of OFWs if he wins a Senate seat in the May 9 elections.

“Dapat ay tutukan ng gobyerno ang enforcement ng regulasyong ito dahil para ito sa benepisyo ng mga migrant workers, kasama na rin ang kanilang mga pamilya,” he said in a statement issued over the weekend.

Recruitment and manning firms, as well as employers who refuse to offer the obligatory insurance, would be blacklisted, according to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration.

The insurance policy must last for the term of the job contract and provide coverage in the event of death, disability, repatriation, medical emergency, or lawsuit.

If their employers refuse to provide insurance, the retired police general advised OFWs to report to authorities and related agencies.

Eleazar came in fifth place in a GoPhilippines.com poll, which was conducted on Saturday after results were gathered in Pangasinan.

He received 58 percent of the vote, trailing Loren Legarda (71 percent), Francis Escudero (64.8 percent), JV Ejercito (64.6 percent), and Senator Joel Villanueva (reelectionist) (63 percent).
