Bislig City, one of Caraga’s 12 island cities, has been proclaimed rabies-free.
BUTUAN CITY, PHILIPPINES – Caraga’s Department of Agriculture (DA-13) has proclaimed 13 local government units (LGUs) rabies-free, including 12 island municipalities.
Dr. Esther Cardeo, DA-13 anti-rabies coordinator, said Monday that 12 of the rabies-free LGUs are island municipalities in the provinces of Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands, and the other is Bislig City in Surigao del Sur.
According to DA-13 data, 96,211 dogs out of Caraga’s total population of 234,239 had been vaccinated against rabies as of 2020. This corresponds to a paltry vaccination rate of 41%.
“Our aim was intended to be 70%, but we weren’t able to achieve it.” This is understandable given the limits imposed by the pandemic,” Cardeno explained.
Caraga is divided into five provinces, each with six cities and 67 municipalities.
The observance of its anti-rabies campaign has been highlighted by the agency as part of the mission of Executive Order No. 84, which established Rabies Awareness Month every March, rationalized control methods for its prevention and eradication, and appropriated funding for the purpose.
Cardeo urged pet owners and local governments in the region to continue to follow the rabies prevention methods in place.
