More sea patrols are expected on the PH-Malaysia-Indonesia border.

MANILA, Philippines — Delfin Lorenzana, Secretary of the Department of National Defense (DND), said on Tuesday that preparations are in the works to boost sea patrols in the tri-border areas of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

Lorenzana made this statement in response to a question during his March 28 meeting with other members of the Trilateral Cooperative Arrangement (TCA).

Lorenzana said they are looking to deploy more fast ships and reconnaissance aircraft to patrol the tri-boundary areas as the strategy is working against terrorist and criminal groups operating in the area, speaking on the sidelines of the Libingan ng mga Bayani’s rites for this year’s Philippine Veterans Week.

“It’s been more than two years and there hasn’t been much kidnapping, which is very good; it means our tactic or strategy is working, so ngayon ang gusto, paigtingin pa namin yan (so what we want to do is intensify even more),” the DND chief said on the sidelines of the Libingan ng Mga Bayani’s rites for this year’s Philippine Veterans Week.

Lorenzana stated that 24-hour patrols are being considered to ensure that terrorist groups or religious extremists operating in the tri-border area of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are unable to relocate or carry out their assaults.

A ministerial meeting on the TCA was held in Kuala Lumpur between Lorenzana, Malaysian Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, and Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto.

“We agreed to develop the TCA beyond the current security environment through multiagency combination and boost intelligence in surveillance activities to further reinforce the security of the Sulu and Sulawesi Seas,” he stated in an earlier Facebook post.

According to Lorenzana, all parties have decided to make TCA a yearly event, strengthen sea monitoring, and look into the possibilities of cooperative training on land.

“Since the TCA was signed in 2017, coordinated patrols and intelligence sharing have led to zero incidents of kidnapping for ransom, which used to be highly common in the Sulu and Sulawesi Seas,” he continued.
