MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Friday that almost 54,000 police personnel have been deployed around the country to ensure safe travel for motorists and commuters during the Lenten season and the rest of the summer months.

Col. Jean Fajardo, a spokesperson for the Philippine National Police, said 53,989 policemen will safeguard peace and order and enforce basic public health measures for tourists around the country.

“We haven’t seen any credible threat(s) from any local threat(s) organization so far.” However, we cannot be complacent, therefore we continue to perform continuous intelligence collecting and monitoring to prevent any planned atrocities, particularly in places where dangerous organizations are known to exist,” Fajardo said in a phone interview.

According to Fajardo, the police force is now on high alert, which means officers are not allowed to take vacations.

“I’d want to advise our fellow Filipinos who are planning visits to our beautiful tourism locations here in the country to bring the appropriate Covid-19 protection,” she said.

“Just keep in mind the bare minimum of public health safety measures…

Remember to wear facemasks and maintain social distance wherever you go,” she said.

She also encouraged people visiting provinces to safeguard their homes and avoid sharing their travel plans on social media.
