The Philippines voted to expel Russia from the UN Human Rights Council.

MANILA, Philippines โ€“ The Philippines was one of the countries that voted to expel Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN HRC).

The UN General Assembly accepted the resolution expelling Russia from the 47-member organization on Thursday, with a two-thirds majority of those voting in favor and 24 voting against.

Fifty-eight countries did not participate in the process.

Russia became a member of the Geneva-based organization in January 2021, as one of 15 countries elected to three-year mandates by the General Assembly.

The General Assembly can suspend a country’s participation in the Council if it commits grave and systematic breaches of human rights, according to the 2006 resolution that established the Council.

The UN said the meeting on Thursday marked the resumption of a special emergency session on the crisis in Ukraine, as well as reports of Russian forces violating international law.
