MANILA, Philippines — For the first three months of 2022, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) claimed that it had received more than PHP80 million from the sale of 96 of the 304 overstaying containers.

According to a Facebook post, the bureau earned PHP80,764,977 from the public auction of 96 containers containing rice and galvanized steel, among other items, through the Assessment and Operations Coordinating Group and Auction and Cargo Disposal Division units of all BOC Collection Districts nationwide.

Some of the containers were condemned and donated instead of being sold at public auction.

From January through March, 38 containers of twine, yarn droppings, and cuts were donated to various organizations, whereas 170 containers containing discarded clothing, rotting meals, used oil, and used furniture, among other things, were condemned.

Cargos that were not withdrawn within the regulatory period of 30 calendar days from payment of duties, taxes, and other charges shall be deemed abandoned, unless covered by a duly issued alert order, and upon the finality of the Decree of Abandonment, according to Customs Administrative Order No. 17-2019.

The BOC will next decide whether the property should be auctioned, condemned, or donated.

The forfeited containers were disposed of in accordance with Sections 1139 and 1141 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, which set out the conditions and modes of disposition for facilitating commerce by reducing port and yard congestion.

Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero stated that BOC is committed to guaranteeing uninterrupted service delivery, particularly in these hard times when the transfer of commodities, essentials, and non-essentials is seen as both significant and crucial.
