MANILA, Philippines — The Australian government has supplied computers with training software to help Filipino aviation security screeners improve their ability to detect forbidden goods in cargo.

Last April 8, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Steven Robinson AO handed over the PCs and X-Ray Tutor (XRT) training software to Office Transportation Security Administration Undersecretary Raul del Rosario.

“While no security screener wants to come across an improvised explosive device while performing their duties, our program can help screeners know what to look for and ‘what to do’ in the event that such a circumstance arises,” says the company “During the software simulation, Robinson remarked.

“Many lives could be spared if hidden components of an improvised explosive device (IED) could be detected in a simulated environment, he noted.

Meanwhile, Del Rosario praised the Australian government for the grant, saying it will assist the agency to identify skill needs.

“Not only will the XRT software assist screeners in honing their skills in recognizing illegal objects, but it will also assist screening supervisors in identifying skill gaps and training requirements,” he said.

The donation was financed by the Australian Department of Home Affairs’ Cyber and Infrastructure Security Centre, and it compliments the OTS’s enhanced cargo screening guidance.

The training package will be delivered in accordance with the priorities of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Global Aviation Security Plan, which is to apply technical solutions and improve the human capability to detect new and emerging threats in order to achieve better civil aviation security outcomes for the Philippines and Australia, according to the Australian Embassy in Manila.
