UAE is ready to host COP28; thanks to the Philippines for their assistance.
MANILA, Philippines โ The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is preparing to host the 28th Climate Conference, which will focus on the economic benefits of climate action.
The UAE Embassy in Manila commended the Philippine government for backing their proposal for the conference, which will take place in Dubai from Nov. 6 to 17, 2023, in a statement released over the weekend.
“Our country is honored to host Climate Conference No. 28 in the year 2023, where it is working to organize a distinguished session that contributes to the world’s adoption of an economic orientation that supports climate action and motivates the international community for more cooperation and acceleration of climate challenge efforts,” said Khalid Alhajeri, head of Support Services at the UAE Embassy.
“In this regard, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Philippines government for its support of the UAE’s COP28 candidacy,” he added.
The UAE is the first country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) to start a national plan aiming at attaining net-zero emissions by 2050, a goal that corresponds with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5ยฐC over pre-industrial levels.
By 2050, the oil giant wants to cut its carbon footprint by 70% and raise sustainable energy’s contribution to its total energy mix from 25% to 50%.
According to the UAE Embassy in Manila, the government has taken many green measures, including contributing more than USD400 million in help and low-interest loans for clean energy projects, as well as investments in renewable energy ventures totaling USD16.8 billion in 70 countries.
To avoid the worst effects of climate change and preserve sustainable earth, the UN recommends that global temperature rise be limited to 1.5ยฐC.
Carbon dioxide emissions must be zero or near zero by 2050 to achieve this.
Today, the need for climate action has become increasingly urgent, with even scientists flocking to the streets to protest and warn the world that limiting global warming to 1.5ยฐC is impossible without immediate emissions reductions across all sectors.
Limiting global warming would require a significant reduction in fossil fuel use, widespread electrification, improved energy efficiency, and the use of alternative fuels, according to a report released on April 4 by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and other international bodies (IPCC).
