The Palace is overjoyed that Filipinos have regained faith in tourism.

MANILA – Malacanang is overjoyed that Filipinos have regained faith in tourism, stressing that travel is critical to the country’s economic recovery.

Martin Andanar, the acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary, made the remark in response to news that domestic travel increased over Holy Week, which ran from April 14 to 17.

After two years of travel restrictions owing to the Covid-19 outbreak, this year’s Holy Week was the first big vacation break for Filipinos under Alert Level 1.

“Magandang balita ‘yan, dumadami na ang mga turista,” says the narrator. So, ibig sabihin, yung confidence level ng ating mga kababayan na magbakasyon ay nandiyan na matapos nga ang mga lockdown. This shows our people’s confidence is returning after the lockdowns),” Andanar remarked in a press conference at the Palace.

Andanar is optimistic that tourism-dependent cities and provinces would be able to recover in a short period of time.

He did, however, remind the public that Covid-19 remained a severe threat to the nation’s health and well-being, and that minimal public health requirements must be followed.

“The pandemic isn’t done yet…

He remarked, “Patuloy nating pinapaalala sa ating mga kababayan na huwag itigil yung (We continue to encourage our countrymen not to cease following) minimal health norms.”

Following allegations that Boracay Island’s tourist capacity has been exceeded, Andanar assured that the Department of Tourism has “advised” both the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources about the tourism overcapacity issue.

“The DILG and DENR have been informed of the breach of Boracay’s excess carrying capacity. “Let us await their findings,” he remarked, adding, “antayin po natin ang kanilang report.”

According to the Malay Tourism Office, there were a total of 21,252 tourist arrivals on April 14 and 22,519 on April 15.

Boracay Island’s current carrying capacity is 19,215.

According to the World Tourism Organization, carrying capacity refers to “the maximum number of people who can visit a destination in a given period without compromising local environmental, physical, economic, or socio-cultural qualities, and without diminishing tourist satisfaction.”

Lifted in part

Meanwhile, Andanar acknowledged that the government has partially eased the ban on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) being deployed to Ethiopia.

“Based on a board resolution issued by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, the government has partially relaxed the ban on the deployment of OFWs to Ethiopia” (POEA). “This comes after Ethiopia’s alert level was reduced from four to two,” he explained.

The Ethiopian government is at odds with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front at the moment (TPLF).

Thousands of civilians have been killed, millions have been displaced, and at least 400,000 people have died as a result of Ethiopia’s civil conflict, according to reports.
