VP Leni: There’s no reason to keep Leila in prison any longer.
MANILA, Philippines — Following witnesses withdrawing their testimonies, Vice President and presidential candidate Leni Robredo asked for Senator Leila de Lima’s release.
Robredo stated in a statement on Monday that during de Lima’s five-year incarceration, not a single gram of illegal drugs or any documentary proof has been filed against him.
“Patunay lang ng katotohanang matagal ko nang iginigiit: Walang kaso laban kay Sen. Leila de Lima,” says the narrator. Ang tanging kasalanan niya ay ang magsabi ng totoo at ipagtanggol ang karapatan ng mga kapwa natin Pilipino (This only proves what I’ve been saying for a long time: Sen. Leila de Lima has no case against her.) Her sole crime is that she tells the truth and defends the rights of all Filipinos),” stated Robredo.
Rafael Ragos, a former Deputy Director of the National Bureau of Investigation and former Director of the Bureau of Corrections, claimed in an affidavit that he was “coerced” into testifying against de Lima and her aide, Ronnie Dayan.
Prior to this, self-confessed drug boss, Kerwin Espinosa reversed his claims that de Lima got money from imprisoned drug lords, despite the fact that he was never a witness in the senator’s proceedings.
“Wala nang dahilan para manatili sa piitan si Sen Leila,” says the narrator. Siyang palayain sa lalong madaling panahon dapat na siyang palayain. Sen Leila has no reason to be in prison, kasa ko ang bawat Pilipinong naniniwala sa hustisya sa panawagan. She should be out very shortly. I’m joining the chorus of Filipinos calling for her freedom). “Leave Leila alone right now,” Robredo remarked.
Some internet users expressed hope that de Lima, the reelection, would be released shortly.
“Leila de Lima must be set free right now. “I’ve always believed in her innocent of the charges leveled against her since day one of her incarceration,” Delilah Causin wrote.
“The fruit of our never-ending prayers for Sen. Leila’s freedom is now slowly emerging. Please, Lord God, make it happen now if it is Your will, Amen!” Teresita Flordeliz wrote on Facebook.

On May 16, the prosecution will present its final three witnesses, barring Espinosa, on the drug accusations against de Lima, according to the Department of Justice.
“The prosecution will not call Espinosa as a witness in this case since his previous statements/affidavit, which he recanted, are irrelevant to the prosecution’s case,” the statement added.
The retraction of Espinosa has no bearing on the pending drug-related allegations against jailed Senator Leila de Lima, Malacanang declared last week.
In a press statement, acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said, “While Kerwin Espinosa appears to have recanted his allegations against Senator Leila de Lima, his recantation will have no effect on the pending criminal cases against the lady senator.”
