‘Digital obesity is caused by consuming too much data and information.’
According to an expert, consuming too much data, knowledge, and media can lead to digital obesity, which can have detrimental consequences on people’s lives.
“Digital obesity is characterized by excessive (information) consumption and insufficient rest. “It’s practically the same as always eating and never doing anything else,” futurist Gerd Leonhard stated at a Turkish Education Association meeting.
People are becoming “congested, overweight, and dying from overconsumption of knowledge,” according to the Zurich-based futurist.
People constantly consume information via social media, he said, but many are unaware of how this can put their lives in danger.
He added that most of the metaverse’s effects on people aren’t real today, thus people don’t have virtuality.
“So, the metaverse is an attempt by technology and social media firms to save themselves,” he said, adding that the metaverse could be far more harmful than social media because individuals have terrible habits there.
Addiction to the internet, social media, and video games assisted by the usage of virtual reality, which diverts people’s attention away from social ties is referred to as the metaverse.
In response to rising technological addiction, he stated that a certain level of addiction is okay. To establish unambiguous rules, he argued, a measure of normalcy and social contract is essential.
“I believe there should be a rule in restaurants prohibiting the use of electronic devices. It would be fantastic. Some restaurants will give you a 10% discount if you put your phone away,” he explained.
In terms of the right to work in the new world order, he believes that requiring people to complete particular technical tasks, such as wearing augmented reality glasses or working in the metaverse, should be illegal.
“Living in virtual reality, being super-fast and superhuman, and performing becomes a demeaning effort,” he remarked.
