The polling body will announce the winning senators on Wednesday

MANILA – The 12 winning senators will be announced by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday, but their final ranking will be determined after the special elections in Lanao del Sur on May 24.

Senators will be elected based on the number of votes cast, according to Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco.

“There will be no standing or rating in the meantime since we will wait for the [special elections] in Lanao del Sur to be completed,” he declared in a press conference.

He said that the Commission had already decided that the remaining votes that had not yet been submitted or sent would have no effect on the magic 12.

“Iyon pong Lanao del Sur, hindi na po natin mahihintay, mahirap hintayin, dahil ang Tubaran, ang special election, dahil 24 po ang Tubaran.” So, baka po [May] 24, the most na makapagpadala ng COC (Certificates of Canvass). As a result, if saka-sakali baka po 24, 25, or 26 tayo makapagproklama, kung hihintayin po natin (We can no longer wait for COCs from Lanao del Sur because the special elections in Tubaran will be on May 24, therefore the earliest they can transmit the COC is on the 24th. As a result, if we wait for it, we might declare by 24, 25, or 26),” Comelec Commissioner George Garcia stated during the “Laging Handa” public briefing.

He stated that canvassing will continue even after the 12 senators’ proclamation to ensure that all ballots are counted.

On Monday, partial and unofficial tallies revealed Robin Padilla, Loren Legarda, Raffy Tulfo, Sherwin Gatchalian, Francis Escudero, Mark Villar, Alan Peter Cayetano, Miguel Zubiri, Joel Villanueva, JV Ejercito, Risa Hontiveros, and Jinggoy Estrada as the top 12 senate candidates.

As of this writing, the official tally had not been released by the National Board of Canvassers.

At the Philippine International Convention Center Forum Tent in Pasay City, winning senators are allowed to bring five guests.

On May 19, representatives from partially victorious party lists or those guaranteed at least one seat will be announced.

According to Garcia, party-list nominees with pending disqualification proceedings will not be announced, but the party-list itself will.
