MANILA – From May 24 to 27, Congress will begin canvassing votes for the presidential and vice-presidential elections.

The canvassing will begin at 2 p.m. on May 24, and will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 25-27, according to Secretary General Mark Llandro Mendoza.

The election returns for president and vice president, officially verified by the Boards of Canvassers of each province and city, are required by the Constitution to be sent to Congress.

The President of the Senate shall, not later than 30 days after the election, open all certificates in the presence of the Senate and the House of Representatives in a joint public session, and the Congress shall canvass the votes after determining the authenticity and proper execution thereof in the manner provided by law.

As Congress, acting as the National Board of Canvassers, prepares for the canvassing of votes and proclamation of the country’s future president and vice president, Speaker Lord Allan Velasco urged his colleagues to exhibit caution and vigilance.

“It is our constitutional obligation as Members of Congress to receive and canvass votes for our country’s two top leaders – our next President and Vice President,” Velasco stated.

“May we all approach this endeavor with a deep, even critical, understanding that we have been entrusted by the Filipino people with the responsibility of ensuring that our choice of leaders is a legitimate reflection of their will,” he added.

Senate President Vicente Sotto III previously stated that Congress will be responsible with announcing the presidential and vice-presidential winners for the May 9, 2022 elections by May 27 or 28.
