Twitter is expanding its creator monetization options by launching Super Follower Only Spaces.

Twitter explains it this way:

“With Super Follows-only Spaces, creators can engage their largest supporters in a layer of dialogue beyond Tweets by engaging them with live audio.”

The new Super Followers-only Spaces, as seen in the screenshots above, will feature a different color palette for the Spaces link, as well as a note at the top saying it’s a ‘Super Followers only’ broadcast.

Non-paying subscribers will still be able to see these broadcasts when they are shared, but they must first join up as Super Follower.

That may be a good method to help grow your subscriber base by providing exclusive Spaces for which others can see a preview and see who else is listening in, which could be a powerful incentive for them to sign up as well.

Overall, Super Follows are a small feature as Twitter continues to experiment with creator monetization tools in the hopes of providing top producers more reasons to devote more time to the platform.

Twitter hasn’t provided any official statistics on Super Follower usage, but the company said in its most recent earnings report that subscription and other income (including data licensing) totaled $94 million in the quarter, down 31% year over year.

Given that Super Follows was only introduced in September, it’s safe to assume that interest has been modest thus far – though few individuals have been able to use the feature.

Users who have access to Super Follows can pick a monthly membership price between $2.99 and $9.99, with Twitter receiving a tiny percentage of each transaction.

Part of the issue with Super Follows is that there isn’t much of a motivation for people to pay when they’ve always been able to read other people’s tweets for free. So why are they starting to pay for them now?

Creators can share exclusive tweets with their paying subscribers through the process, and there are more ways to provide members-only content. Super Follow, on the other hand, goes against the platform’s nature, which has always been about more open, public dialogue.

This mental adjustment is likely to be a major roadblock to wider Super Follows adoption, which also requires creators to devise comprehensive strategies for what they’ll give their paying audience.

For many people, this is more difficult than it appears. While some users may believe that people will pay to read their tweets because they like them and what they publish on the app, the fact is that they won’t unless there are some truly compelling add-on features to entice them to spend.

This is where Super Follower Spaces could come into play, and it could end up being a good, straightforward draw for producers looking to increase their app subscribers.

It’s a low-cost, low-commitment content supplement. If you already have a large number of followers who are interested in what you have to say, airing an exclusive audio program may be the thing that convinces them to part with their hard-earned cash.

We’ll find out soon enough; Twitter says the feature will be available to all Super Follower creators starting this week.

On iOS, Super Follows is still in beta testing with a few select creators in the United States. Subscribers on iOS and Android will be able to join and request to talk in these Super Follows-only Spaces, while subscribers on the web will be able to listen but not participate.
