DAVAO CITY, Philippines — In the wake of allegations that a new Covid-19 subvariant has entered the country, the Davao City Covid-19 Task Force informed residents on Thursday that the city is prepared to deal with the threat.

“I guarantee the public that the task force is ready to deal with the virus’s new varieties. Our plans are already in place, and all we have to do now is press the button to address the threat of an increase in cases “Davao City Covid-19 Task Force spokesperson Dr. Michelle Schlosser stated.

Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 has been found in 14 people, including 11 international tourists, two Metro Manila residents, and one resident of Puerto Princesa City in Palawan, according to health officials.

Even with tighter border controls, Schlosser believes that new variations will find their way into the country and city.

“The illness is undetectable. Some people who are sick show symptoms, while others do not, and others who do have symptoms hide it and refuse to be tested “she stated.

Covid-19 sufferers can be treated at a number of governmental and private facilities in the city. Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), Davao Doctors Hospital, San Pedro Hospital, Brokenshire Hospital, Metro Davao Medical and Research Center, Inc., and Anda Riverview Medical Center, Inc. are among them.

There are 87 Covid-19 ICU beds and 455 COVID-19 ward beds at SPMC alone.

Meanwhile, the city’s Covid-19 Task Force reported that there are still 14 ongoing cases as of Thursday.

The task team has urged Dabawenyos to seek booster shots because vaccination coverage is still just about 20% of the population.
