The Philippine Coast Guard has increased its lifesaving capabilities in the WPS.

MANILA โ€“ The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is improving its capabilities to protect lives in all of the country’s West Philippine Sea possessions (WPS).

The installation of command outposts (COPs) and communications equipment in all features held by the Philippines is now underway, according to PCG commandant Admiral Artemio Abu.

“The COP will be set up on the island that is now populated. PCG diyan ginagawa natin nag-install tayo ng communications equipment. The goal is to increase the Coast Guard’s presence in topics concerning safety implementation. Ang buoy markers na nilagay natin kasama na rin para nandoon ang Coast Guard, ready to assist in the event na may disaster or emergency ang mangingisda natin, monitored (agad) ng Coast Guard The PCG is also putting together communication systems. Our goal is to increase the Coast Guard’s involvement in topics relating to safety initiatives, such as the installation of buoy markers. The Coast Guard is on standby to assist our Filipino fishermen in the event of a tragedy or emergency; all actions are) closely watched by the Coast Guard) “In a Thursday interview with the Philippine News Agency, Abu stated.

Apart from these initiatives, Abu stated that the PCG is assisting other government agencies in the WPS with marine resource conservation.

“Protection of maritime resources, Kasama yan. The pag-ikot ng barko natin is kasama. When our ships go on patrol, we integrate maritime resource protection. We now have more assets, staff, and resources. We are increasing our presence in the WPS to demonstrate that it belongs to us), “he added.

The PCG’s main responsibilities include enforcing all applicable laws in Philippine waters, conducting maritime security operations, protecting life and property at sea, and safeguarding the maritime environment and resources.

Furthermore, Abu stated that the PCG’s approach to multi-agency patrols in the WPS is “complementary” to the national government’s “whole-of-nation” approach.

“The approach is complementary. We all know the PCG owns the government’s “white ships” (law enforcement), thus that is why the PCG is there “he stated.

The Philippines’ neighboring countries, according to Abu, take the same strategy.

“Because the PCG is a universal service, our mission and function are nearly identical sa kanila na kung ano ang (whatever the) reason of our existence (is similar with our neighboring countries). PCG is a seagoing and humanitarian service that is separate from the country’s uniformed and armed forces “Abu stated.

He also said that “white ships” reduce the likelihood of violent encounters in contentious locations.
