Marcos plans to use a 2016 PCA judgment to push his territorial claims.

MANILA – President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. stated on Thursday that he would maintain the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s (PCA) 2016 verdict dismissing most of China’s South China Sea (SCS) claims and would preserve the Philippines’ sovereign rights in its maritime domain.

In a conversation with a limited group of journalists, Marcos stated that his administration would support the Philippines’ claim to the West Philippine Sea in order to assert the country’s territorial claims.

“We have a significant judgment in our favor, and we will continue to assert our territorial rights based on it. It isn’t a claim at all. It is already a matter of territorial rights for us “he stated

He also stated that he would safeguard the Philippines’ sovereignty and “not in any way undermine it.”

“We will not allow a single square millimeter of our maritime shoreline and up to 200-kilometer rights to be trampled on,” he warned.

He stated that his government will speak to China “firmly” about the issue.

He did stress, though, that the Philippines would not go to war with China, calling it “the last thing we need right now.”

On July 12, 2016, the PCA in the Hague, Netherlands, decided in favor of the Philippines’ suit challenging Beijing’s ostensibly historic rights to practically the entire SCS.

China has repeatedly disregarded the SCS verdict, while the Philippines has maintained its commitment to peaceful and diplomatic dialogue to address maritime conflicts.

Outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to a peaceful resolution of issues in the important waterway.

“The lynchpin of regional peace and stability is a rules-based order. Peaceful dispute settlement is a fundamental and indispensable component of any organization founded on the supremacy of the law “he stated
