In a phone chat with Putin, German and French leaders push for a quick cease-fire.

In a three-way phone discussion on Saturday, German and French leaders urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to commit to “an immediate ceasefire and a withdrawal of Russian soldiers” from Ukraine.

According to German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin for 80 minutes.

Scholz and Macron urged Putin to engage in “direct serious conversations” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and find a “diplomatic solution to the situation.”

According to UN estimates, at least 4,031 people have been killed and 4,735 injured in Ukraine since Russia’s attack on its neighbor began on February 24. The genuine price tag is thought to be significantly higher.

According to the UN refugee agency, more than 6.7 million people have fled to neighboring countries, while more than 7.7 million have been internally displaced.
