The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has given the Sual Dried Fish Vendors Association in this town equipment worth PHP313,600, which would help them increase production even during the wet season.

Florencia Orfelia, the organization’s president, said in a phone interview on Thursday that the multi-commodity solar tunnel drier was supplied just in time for the season when drying things quickly is challenging.

“Kami ay nagpapasalamat sa DOST ng Sual at sa local government unit (LGU) ng Sual at kami ang napili,” she said.

Orfelia claims that drying thin-skinned fish takes around an hour and a half, whereas drying thick-skinned fish takes two to three days.

“However, during the testing, drying a batch of fish using the drier took only two hours,” she stated.

She went on to say that they are hoping to have more dryers because the number of their items may exceed the capacity.

“We also requested that the DOST and the LGU train us and provide us with materials for the manufacturing of fish sauce because we have lean months for our dried fish production and some of the fishes that we were unable to dry were wasted,” she explained.

The organization, together with Matico farmers Swisa Inc., both from Sual town, were the first grantees of the Innovation, Science, and Technology for Accelerating Regional Technology-Based Development program, according to DOST staff member Bernalyn Martinez.

“The LGU and the DOST have worked together on this program. “The LGU recommended these organizations to the DOST for equipment, training, and other things to help them enhance the quality and quantity of their manufacturing,” she explained.
