ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation-Zamboanga Peninsula (PhilHealth-9) has seen an upsurge in dengue claims in this area.

According to Dr. Jacobo Maria Mendoza, the PhilHealth-9 benefits administration division head, 466 people took advantage of the dengue package in 2021 from January to April.

According to Mendoza, the number increased to 1,451 within the same time period this year.

On April 8, this year, a dengue outbreak was proclaimed.

For the first four months of 2021, PhilHealth-9 paid PHP4.7 million, compared to PHP15 million for the same period this year.

Each patient with dengue illness receives PHP10,000 from PhilHealth, with severe cases receiving PHP16,000 each.

“Always be prepared; don’t wait till you’re sick to consider registering with PhilHealth,” Mendoza advised.

Due to the Universal Health Care Law, anyone can receive the dengue package, with the first stage requiring registration with the office.

Since January of this year, the municipal health office has documented 2,223 instances of dengue fever, including 18 deaths.

Dengue fever is a viral infection that primarily affects infants and children under the age of five.
