MANILA, Philippines – Over the weekend, Philippine Army (PA) forces performed humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations in communities affected by Mount Bulusan’s phreatic eruption.

Army spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad stated the 31st Infantry Battalion of the 9th Infantry Division performed HADR operations for the people of Juban, Sorsogon, in a statement Monday night.

“For HADR efforts, the 31st (Infantry Battalion) deployed 16 teams with 147 men, 20 military trucks, and an ambulance to aid 54 families in Barangay Puting Sapa, Juban, Sorsogon. As of June 6, 2022, no injuries have been reported, and all evacuees who spent overnight at the Barangay Tughan evacuation center have returned to their homes “He went on to say.

According to the most recent situation report, power, water, and communication services are operating normally, and national roads and bridges are open for travel.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania’s top general, Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr., told the 9th Infantry Division that their HADR operations would be well supported.

“Your Philippine Army is always ready and dedicated to aid and support our local government units, as well as to provide all available manpower and logistical resources to alleviate the effects of natural calamities in our communities,” he added.

Personnel from the 31st Infantry Battalion also helped clear ash from the volcano’s outburst in Barangay Puting Sapa, Juban on Monday, in addition to their HADR operations.

“A day after the volcano’s phreatic eruption, the PA, along with barangay authorities and village residents, removed the ashfall,” Trinidad stated.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Alert Level 1 is still in effect over Mount Bulusan.

“Be assured that your Philippine Army is always prepared for any eventuality. “Our kababayans in areas near the volcano are in good hands,” Brawner said.
