Marcos promises to uphold human rights.
MANILA โ President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. pledged on Friday to preserve human rights during his presidency.
On Friday, Marcos made the pledge at a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator to the Philippines Gustavo Gonzales at his Mandaluyong City headquarters.
On the sidelines of his meeting with Marcos, Gonzales stated that the President-elect stressed the importance of ensuring a “high level of accountability” for human rights crimes.
“On human rights, my message was to first and foremost underline the United Nations’ support for all of the Philippines’ initiatives on the human rights agenda,” he said. “He (Marcos) also underlined the significance of having a high degree of human rights responsibility.”
According to Gonzales, Marcos also revealed that the Philippines has held a series of discussions to defend and protect human rights.
“He even revealed that he is holding a series of meetings to determine the best method to advance the human rights agenda. As a result, this was really promising “Gonzales explained.
Marcos also stated his intention to attend the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will take place in September this year, according to Executive Secretary-designate Vic Rodriguez in a separate statement.
“President-elect Bongbong Marcos responded by saying that attending the General Assembly and meeting with other world leaders would be extremely significant,” Rodriguez said.
This came after Gonzales mentioned Marcos’ likely attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
“This will be the first time that President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. would address a large group of heads of state at the United Nations General Assembly. As a result, this is a fantastic and, I believe, historic chance for the President and the Philippines to convey their new vision, new challenges, and new prospects “he stated
Marcos and Gustavo also discussed the Philippines’ peace and prosperity, as well as the country’s climate issue and resiliency.
The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly will take place from September 13 to 27. The high-level General Debate is planned to begin on September 20.
Marcos, as head of state, can use his diplomatic immunity to go to the United States, according to US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.
One of the five diplomats that paid Marcos a visit was Gustavo.
Ambassadors Annika Thunborg of Sweden, Charles Brown of the Holy See, William Carlos of Ireland, and Alain Gaschen of the Swiss Confederation are among the others in attendance.
