Twitter said on Tuesday that it is expanding its business offerings with a new feature called Location Spotlight for professional accounts. Local businesses and shops can now include information such as their business or shop’s location, contact information, and operating hours in their profiles.

Users with Twitter Professional accounts in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia can now use the new feature.

When users visit a company’s profile, they can see the updated information. When consumers tap on the location, they can use a mapping program like Google Maps to receive directions to the shop.

Last Monday, app researcher Jane Manchun Wong posted that Twitter might add a caution regarding sharing location data with Google to the Location Spotlight settings. (For this new feature, we’ve gone out to Twitter for a comment on their data-sharing rules.)

Businesses can also include a phone number, a link to send a text message, or an email address in their profile.

This new feature is similar to Google Maps’ business data cards, which display information about a company’s location, website, operation hours, and contact information.

Professional profiles, which were first introduced last year and allow businesses and creators to use modules like the About module to display information, the Shop module to display products from their catalog, and the Newsletter module to create newsletters using the Twitter-owned tool Revue, were first introduced last year. It opened out the Professional profiles function to everyone in March.

Despite the acquisition controversy, Twitter has added a number of shopping-related services in recent months, including virtual storefronts for displaying items for sale and product drops for listing products at a specific time and date.
