If you make the incorrect impression with a terrible LinkedIn profile photo, you won’t impress anyone – employers, managers, clients, and prospects.
Your goal is to submit a picture of oneself on LinkedIn that is happy, pleasant, and engaging.
It’s crucial to project a friendly and professional demeanor. Looking professional, however, does not necessitate a solemn demeanor. Instead of being intense, try to be honest and likable.
Make sure your LinkedIn profile photo is a 400-by-400-pixel high-resolution professional headshot.
Crop the photo such that your face fills the frame from the top of your shoulders to just above your head. You don’t need a full-body shot of yourself.

Your headshot should, of course, reflect who you are on a daily basis. That is, you now, not you ten years ago. Don’t be the person who looks different in real life or when viewed at a higher magnification — this can give people pause.

- In your shot, don’t add a pet or a child.
- Don’t use a vacation photo or a photo of yourself on a beach, golf course, or mountain.
- You should never, ever, ever use a selfie.
- Don’t put a photo of yourself in an automobile on social media.
- Wear as little or no makeup as possible to appear as natural and professional as possible.
- Wearing too much jewelry or wearing too much casual clothing is not a good idea.
- Use a single photo instead of a group shot. (If you choose a group shot as your profile picture, people might not know who you are.)
- Use a different photo from the one you used on Instagram or Facebook. Consider yourself a professional.
- Use a photo that is not low-resolution or grainy.
- Don’t use a photo of yourself that is more than five years old – remember, it’s fine if you are graying or losing your hair — your clients want to see the real you, the person with whom they engage on a daily basis. Your photo should be representative of how you seem on a daily basis (glasses, hair or no hair, etc.)
- Wearing sunglasses or holding a drink is not a good idea (this goes for all photos on LinkedIn period)
- Don’t use the profile photo box for anything other than a photo of yourself — not your company’s or charity’s logo, not a sunset – just you.
- Don’t use a shot of your entire physique. Only your face should be visible in your profile photo.
Every two years, professionals recommended on getting a new headshot and taking several shots in various clothing to provide you options for posting on social media.
Even if your workplace does not provide headshots, getting a new one is simple. Many local photographers will take professional photos of you for a reasonable fee (use Google, Instagram, and word of mouth to find someone).
