MANILA, Philippines — On the heels of increased repair and building operations as lockdowns relax amid the epidemic, a home improvement and construction supplies retailer are confident about its chances under President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s new administration.
Wilcon Depot Inc. senior executive vice president and chief operating officer Rosemarie Ong said in a virtual news briefing Monday that the construction sector is “actually extremely alive and active currently,” and that this trend is expected to continue under the incoming Marcos government.
“Many of the construction (activities) have already been pushed back. We’re seeing a lot of activity, particularly institutional and even private construction, so demand is definitely ramping up,” she said.
The pandemic, according to Ong, has disrupted construction activities in recent years.
“Hopefully, it will continue, and there will be no further delays in the following months,” she added, “so that we can close the year on a positive note.” “And we’ve seen how the economy has recovered, even in retail, particularly in home renovation.” That has held up well in recent years since we are also regarded essential.”
With the loosening of movement limitations, Wilcon Depot president Lorraine Belo-Cincochan remarked that individuals are now allocating a budget for travel in addition to house repair.
“I believe there is some retaliation tourism, particularly local tourism because travel is still tough.” As a result, we have customers who are building or upgrading their resorts and restaurants. “I think it will also assist us,” she said. “There are a lot of (people) going out to eat, going out to other places locally.”
These activities, according to Cincochan, have put the company on schedule to meet its objective of 100 outlets by 2025.
“Given the current (number of coronavirus illness 2019) cases, I believe we are on track.” Hopefully, fingers crossed, everything is at alert level 1, and we don’t have any more surges (in cases), lockdowns, or mobility limitations, and we see that the 100-store target will be met on time,” she added.
As of June 20, 2022, the company has 76 locations.
