Philippines pioneers Holcim Circular Explorer will aid in Manila Bay rehabilitation

A revolutionary solar-powered catamaran created to aid in the cleaning of the nation’s coastal areas was launched in the Philippines by cement producer Holcim.

The Circular Explorer by Holcim is a prototype catamaran designed to collect and recycle plastic from waterways.

Horia Adrian, president, and chief executive officer of Holcim Philippines, stated during the launch on Thursday at the Manila Yacht Club that the Circular Explorer will travel around Manila Bay over the next three years to assist with efforts by the government to restore the bay.

The Circular Explorer, which is run by One Ocean One Earth, has a four-ton per shift capability for collected plastic debris.

Adrian stated that the salvaged plastic from the bay would be transported to Holcim Manila Terminal to be sorted for recyclable plastic garbage. Additionally, other plastic garbage will be processed and used as an alternative fuel by the business.

“It is a Holcim Group project. As the first nation has chosen to host this vessel, the Philippines is pleased, he continued.

According to Holcim Group sustainability and innovation leader Magali Anderson, the company decided to launch Circular Explorer in the Philippines because it thinks the ship will have the most impact there and because the company has “excellent operations” there.

“The Circular Explorer is a symbol of Holcim’s dedication to sustainability, and its core values include minimizing a building’s environmental impact, recycling materials across our company, as well as renewing the marine ecosystem and all of our ecosystems in general. That was the project’s goal in mind. This should be multiplied. If we can accomplish this in Manila, we need to be able to do it elsewhere—ideally all over the world—Nollaig Forrest, head of communications and public relations for Holcim Group.

Adrian stated that the Circular Explorer is a part of the Holcim Group’s mission to promote a circular economy in addition to aiding in the cleanup effort in Manila Bay.

By “creating more with less,” the circular economy addresses the problems caused by climate change. It recycles generated garbage and reuses already-existing materials to protect natural resources and prevent the creation of new waste.

Adrian continued by saying that Holcim will collaborate with local colleges and institutions through Circular Explorer to promote the circular economy and address the problem of plastic waste in coastal areas.

Because Holcim is the most well-known name in Philippine construction, we should be setting an example for others to follow in terms of how the nation will be built in the future. As the top brand in the nation, we accepted responsibility for making this happen and setting an example for the Philippines, according to Adrian.
