New “Jupiter” cable infrastructure from PLDT to increase PH international data capacity
The new “Jupiter” cable system, which is currently the fastest cable line between the Philippines and the United States, is expected to increase the Philippines’ ability to send data internationally.
Jojo Gendrano, FVP and Head of the Enterprise Group at PLDT-Smart, said in a statement on Tuesday that the new cable system “significantly advances” not only the companies’ digital infrastructure but also the “total digital readiness” of the nation.
“The Jupiter Cable system acts as a cross-border route for international data traffic to get to the Philippines. It is anticipated to significantly increase the nation’s international capability to the USA and Japan, further promote the trade of digital services globally, and as a consequence, drive the nation’s digital economy, according to Gendrano.
On Tuesday, it opened a new landing station in Daet, Camarines Norte.
The cable network is the most recent of PLDT’s 16 international cables, which carry crucial data traffic into and out of the nation.
From North America, the cable travels directly over the Pacific Ocean to Japan’s Maruyama and Shima, as well as to its new landing place in the Philippines.
Jupiter is expected to expand PLDT’s current 20 Terabits per second international bandwidth to around 60 Terabits per second once it is fully operational.
“PLDT’s rising investments in undersea fiber links underline the company’s strong commitment to building data capacity and network resiliency to assist fortify the Philippines’ digital competitiveness and meet the enormous demand of hyperscalers,” he said.
According to him, Jupiter is the first international submarine cable system in the Philippines to employ an “open cable paradigm,” enabling PLDT to provide hyperscale bandwidth to businesses around the globe “more swiftly.”
“PLDT commits to enhancing the nation’s hyperscale readiness by investing in digital infrastructure that facilitates the digital adoption and automation of industries and businesses across all economic sectors, helping to accelerate growth, demand, and consumption of digital services, and ultimately helping to improve the quality of life of Filipinos,” he said.
