Senate will look into provinces’ power outages.
The Senate will investigate the issues with the rural electric grid as more provinces, primarily run by local electric cooperatives, report service outages.
The chair of the energy committee, senator Raffy Tulfo, announced on Saturday that he will introduce a resolution to launch an inquiry into power outages, promising to hold responsible parties accountable.
Tulfo criticized Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (Ormeco) officials during Friday’s episode of his well-liked “Wanted sa Radyo” public service program after customers complained about unresolved decades-long power outages and unfairly high electricity prices.
The only power supplier in the province is Ormeco.
Bern Josep Persia, one of the complainants, claimed that customers have been experiencing power outages that continue for more than 12 hours.
“The Ormeco issue has persisted for twenty years. Among those impacted are electric appliances and pupils who struggle with studying. Even worse, Tulfo remarked in Filipino, “electricity charges are exorbitant despite the frequent service interruptions.
According to Humphrey Dolor, general manager of Ormeco, one of the causes of the ongoing brownouts is the problem with independent power supply.
According to Tulfo, this is a poor justification, and customers must receive value for their money.
He informed Dolor that the director of the Electric Power Industry Management Bureau, Mario Marasigan, said that Ormeco had not been implementing the Department of Energy’s suggestions for resolving the power shortages.
“Why must it come to a conclusion recommendation? If the relevant agencies only did their duties, consumers wouldn’t have to suffer, Tulfo said.
According to complaints Tulfo has received, other regions and provinces experiencing continuous brownouts include Nueva Ecija, Northern Samar, Pampanga, San Isidro and San Jose in Nueva Ecija, Calaca in Batangas, Quezon province, Tabuk City in Kalinga, South Cotabato, Maguindanao, Ozamiz, Lumban in Laguna, Zamboanga City, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Marinduque,
The province government reports that in order to at least lessen the number of hours of service disruption, Ormeco, and Topteam Power Generation, Inc. signed an agreement for an 18.3-megawatt emergency power supply deal on Thursday at the power cooperative’s main office in Calapan City.
