Monkeypox defense prepared by DOH: Palace

Following the discovery of two further instances of the virus in the nation, Malacanang reassured the populace that the Department of Health (DOH) was prepared to stop the spread of monkeypox.

“The Department of Health has ensured our readiness for monkeypox after the confirmation of two more cases of the disease,” press secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles wrote on Facebook on Friday evening. “Siniguro ng Department of Health (Philippines) ang kahandaan natin para sa monkeypox matapos ang kumpirmasyon ng dalawang bagong kaso ng nasabing sakit.”

The number of cases in the nation has now reached three, according to a report released by the DOH on Friday.

The second case involves a 34-year-old Filipino national, and the third case involves a 29-year-old Filipino, both of whom have traveled to countries where cases have been confirmed.

The DOH Research Institute for Tropical Medicine’s polymerase chain reaction test revealed that they were afflicted with monkeypox.

The first verified case and the second confirmed case are unrelated, and both individuals are currently being treated in strict isolation.

For both cases, the DOH is conducting a case investigation and contract tracing.

Cruz-Angeles cited Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire of the DOH as saying that monkeypox could spread through skin-to-skin contact with an infected person.

She claimed that monkeypox is distinct from the airborne coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19).

“Usec Vergeire also reminded us to continue following health protocols to protect ourselves from the Covid-19 and monkeypox virus,” she said. “Nagpaalala rin si Usec Vergeire na patuloy nating sundin ang health protocols para makaiwas sa Covid-19 at monkeypox virus.”

The DOH claimed that the country’s first instance of monkeypox has already recovered and been released from isolation.

According to the findings of a study of recent cases in non-endemic countries, monkeypox may be transmitted through sexual contact.

In particular, persons with rashes or open wounds should not have skin-to-skin contact with suspected cases; the DOH told the public.

Additionally, travelers from nations where monkeypox cases have been reported were advised to get medical help right once if they experience symptoms including fever, lymphadenopathy or “kulani,” and rashes.

The Department of Health emphasized that anyone may contract monkeypox. “Keep your hands tidy. Put on a mask. Pick regions with good ventilation and use your elbow to cover coughing. “
