Angara will investigate underemployment and youth unemployment.
On Thursday, the Senate Committee on Youth, which is led by Senator Sonny Angara, the author of Senate Resolution No. 155, will hold an investigation into the nation’s youth unemployment and underemployment rates.
On Wednesday, Angara emphasized his concern about the difficulty young Filipinos are having obtaining employment, despite the fact that the economy has begun to recover from the two-year coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
Although the actual numbers have decreased over the last two years, according to Angara, they are still high and may even increase again unless the proper actions are made to address the problem.
“The Covid-19 pandemic had a significant effect on the whole public, including young people. One may even make the case that the pandemic’s limits on mobility made life harder for young people. They found it extremely challenging to enter the workforce, according to a statement from Angara.
According to the Philippine Statistics Authority’s (PSA) June 2022 Labor Force Survey, the percentage of young people who are employed rose to 88.2 percent from 87.9 percent in May 2022.
The study also revealed a decline in youth underemployment, from 745,000 in May 2022 to 653,000 in June 2022.
Angara asked the government to make use of the current legislation for the youth’s empowerment.
A number of legislation, such as RA 10917, or the Expanded Special Program for the Employment of Students, RA 10869, which formalized the JobStart Philippines program, and RA 11261, or the First Time Jobseekers Program, are in place to assist Filipino youngsters in finding employment. These regulations have helped young people a lot, but we want to explore further options to close the gap between school and employment, the official said.
Other topics up for discussion are Senate Bills 180, 675, and 840, all of which aim to create the Young Farmers and Fisherfolk Challenge Program. These are in addition to Senate Resolution No. 155.
