Police inspecting facilities for typhoon damage.

A damage assessment of police facilities in areas affected by Super Typhoon Karding, which devastated Luzon on Sunday, was ordered by the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday.

Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., the head of the PNP, stated that to ensure that funds are available for repairing affected facilities, they must expedite the downloading of cash.

Azurin also gave the police chiefs and other commanders the responsibility of assessing the condition of their staff to see if the weather disruption had impacted them.

“Additionally, we want to ensure that we look after our employees. To determine whether this weather disturbance negatively impacted PNP personnel, we require information from our personnel on the ground “In a message to the media, Azurin stated.

To ensure strong coordination among police units for disaster response, Maj. Gen. Valeriano De Leon, chief of the Directorate for Information and Communication Technology and Management (DICTM), said they are currently looking to establish a reliable communication line even amid typhoons, earthquakes, and other calamities.

De Leon stated that to maintain the flow of commands and interoperability from the national headquarters at Camp Crame down to the police stations; dependable communication infrastructure is necessary among police units across the nation.

“PNP officers are among the first people to arrive on the scene in emergencies. Our people on the ground are routinely called upon to help, from pre-disaster measures like preemptive evacuations to a post-disaster reaction like search and rescue and relief distribution, “said de Leon.

Therefore, he continued, “it is crucial that we have a solid line of communication so that whatever occurs on the ground can quickly reach the higher-ups for instant direction and response.

Typhoons and earthquakes in the past have shown that once the telecom companies’ communication connections are destroyed, the essential responses are typically delayed.

According to De Leon, time is a crucial component in disaster response because lives are frequently at risk.

“Our objective of maintaining a trustworthy communication channel even during emergencies is in keeping with the M+K+K=K program of our Chief PNP Gen. Azurin. This is essential for both responding to disasters and preserving national peace and order, “De Leon” added.

“We in the PNP pledged to do,” he continued, “to ensure the delivery of services to the Filipino people in these times when ICT is upgrading rapidly.
