In the next five years, a DOE executive expects the Visayas to have a reliable power source.
According to a top Department of Energy (DOE) official in the Visayas area on Thursday, the outlook for the region’s power supply over the next five years is stable, with an abundance of supply and no signs of a shortfall.
Lawyer Russ Mark Gamallo, officer-in-charge (OIC) of the DOE-Visayas Field Office, claimed in an interview with reporters that there is currently no threat of a power shortage due to the ongoing grid interconnection between the Visayas and Mindanao. The forum took place at the Sangguniang Panglungsod session hall here.
Gamallo said in English and Cebuano, “In the Visayas, we have more than enough power within our grid, with additional power plants plus the expanding transmission projects of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).”
He continued, “The expansion would help in the power stability to maintain the supply in the Visayas,” mentioning ongoing projects in the provinces of Cebu and Bohol that should be finished in one to two years.
Gamallo emphasized that there would be a day when the energy supply would be insufficient to meet the demand.
The DOE is therefore considering reviving its nuclear energy program as a potential alternative in the future, as renewable and conventional energy may no longer be able to meet the nation’s supply requirements.
According to Gamallo, the Constitution forbids the use of nuclear energy in the nation, so unless the ban is lifted, “I think it is still a long shot from now.”
The mayor of this nation’s capital, Felipe Antonio Remollo, invited the DOE representative to attend a forum organized in conjunction with the ongoing recognition of Civil Service Month in September.
