PH confirms its close defense alliances with Japan and Australia.

Undersecretary Jose Faustino Jr., the officer in charge of the Department of National Defense (DND), met with representatives from Australia and Japan to examine measures to improve bilateral collaboration.

DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said in a statement on Wednesday that Faustino met with the defense ministers of Japan and Australia on the sidelines of his official visit to Hawaii in the United States on September 30 to attend the meeting hosted by the US Indo-Pacific Command. He also met with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles.

The current security developments in the area, especially the situation in the South and East China Seas, and ways to strengthen Philippines-Japan bilateral defense cooperation were discussed during the meeting, according to Andolong. These included the possibility of conducting maritime cooperative activities, technology transfers, and dialogues at all levels to address shared security challenges and advance cooperation.

He said that Faustino and Hamada had agreed to talk about further frameworks of collaboration that would strengthen and deepen bilateral ties between the Philippines and Japan and aid each nation’s efforts to “ensure a secure and stable environment.”

In addition, the two noted that the meeting was opportune and a significant follow-up to the September meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. further to discuss future cooperative efforts in defense and security.

In the meantime, Marles and Faustino discussed the security situation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Maritime cooperation initiatives, counterterrorism training, educational and professional development possibilities, as well as talks and discussions to solve shared security problems and advance shared objectives, were also discussed, according to Andolong.

The two officials also discussed the potential for multilateral training exercises with other like-minded nations to handle both conventional and unconventional security problems, the source continued.
