NDRRMC closely monitors Mayon Volcano.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Mayon Volcano is under close observation.
In mixed Filipino and English, NDRRMC spokesperson and Office of Civil Defense Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said, “We are now on heightened monitoring because we are looking at all her activities, but while the situation is still stable, we will see to the readiness of our responders or the LGUs for that matter, so that we can react immediately in case the alert levels are elevated further should there be further volcanic activities.”
Alejandro advised local government units (LGUs) close to the volcano to firmly forbid people from entering or engaging in any activity within the six-kilometer permanent risk zone, particularly in places close to the volcano to avalanches or earth fissuring.
Authorities in Albay should strictly enforce the rule that “no one should be permitted admission there,” he continued.
Meanwhile, all human activities are forbidden within the permanent risk zone of six kilometers around Mayon Volcano, according to the Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDZ).
After Mayon Volcano’s alert level was elevated from 1 (abnormal) to 2, the ban was issued over the weekend (increasing unrest).
Governor Noel Rosal of Albay declared that “mountain climbers, orchid pickers, trekking, camping, and other associated leisure activities are outlawed.”
Residents and farmers are also advised to stay away from the danger zone, particularly in the towns of Sto. Domingo in Barangay Lidong, Legazpi City in upper Barangay Padang, Buyuan, Matanag, Bonga and Mabinit, Daraga in Barangay Banadero, Matnog, Salvacion, Miisi, and Malobago; Camalig in upper Quirangay, Tumpa, Sua, Ano
Rosal also warned those who live near rivers and valleys to be on the lookout for lahar in the event of extended periods of heavy rainfall of 40 to 60 millimeters per hour.
Once alert level 3 status is formally notified, local disaster councils are recommended to examine their evacuation action plans.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology upgraded Mayon’s alert level on October 7 from Level 1 (abnormal) to Level 2 (growing unrest), despite no discernible increase in volcanic activity.
Renato Solidum Jr., secretary of science and technology for the Department of Science and Technology, claimed that magma steadily rose to the surface, ejecting lava that formed a lava dome and that the dome grew in size as more lava accumulated.
Last August 21, the warning level for the volcano was raised from 0 to 1 due to the discovery of the dome.
Based on electronic tilt, GPS, and accurate leveling survey measures, it has also been noted that Mayon Volcano has slightly inflated. This indicates that magma is still slowly rising to the surface. As a result, Solidum claimed, the alert level was raised to Level 2.
