Four fishing communities in San Jose, Tarlac, received fish processing equipment from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Central Luzon (BFAR-3) to safeguard their long-term survival.

The BFAR granted about PHP350,000 worth of post-harvest equipment, including a fish smokehouse and mobile fish vending equipment, on Tuesday through the Tarlac Provincial Fisheries Office.

Members of Villa Aglipay, Farmers and David Women’s Association-Oplan Isda, Samahan ng Magkakaisang Mamamayan ng Purok Pag-ASA (SANMAPA), and Barangay Lubigan Farmers Association were among the awardees.

According to BFAR-3 chief Wilfredo Cruz, the move was a part of their organization’s Fisheries Livelihood Support Program, which is financed by the Bayanihan II Inclusive Enterprise Development Project.

Cruz stated in a social media post that “the distribution of equipment was targeted at boosting the food security and sustainable revenue for the fisherfolk.”

The BFAR-3 provided training on fish deboning, smoking, and bottling last May to improve the beneficiaries’ abilities and knowledge of technologies for higher income.

Cruz claimed that one of the strategies used by their bureau to reduce post-harvest losses was value-added activities like training.

He continued, “The training is part of the ongoing BFAR-3 program in the landlocked province of Tarlac, which aims to maximize their meager water resources and support fish post-harvest activities for overall national food security.
