A health official announced on Friday that the number of cholera cases in Central Luzon, Central Visayas, and Eastern Visayas over the last four months had surpassed the epidemic threshold.

Director of the Department of Health’s Epidemiology Bureau Alethea de Guzman said in an online forum that from January 1 to October 1, 2,622 instances in the Eastern Visayas, three in Central Visayas, and 150 in Central Luzon.

However, she added, “We don’t have a specific province, highly urbanized city, or different component city that breached the epidemic threshold.

Olongapo City, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Ormoc City are among the regions where the number of cases has increased during the last four weeks, she continued.

3,890 cholera cases were reported nationwide this year, up from 2,881 during the same period last year, a 286 percent rise.

Of the overall instances, almost 52 percent, or 2,031, are women, and 18 percent, or 692, are kids between the ages of five and nine.
