In Kadiwa QC and SRA offices, DA would offer sugar for P70 per kg.

According to the Department of Agriculture’s Sugar Regulatory Administration (DA-SRA), consumers may soon access sugar for PHP70 per kilogram.

The DA-SRA said in a statement that this price will be temporarily in place to assist consumers while “waiting for sugar mills to be in full swing.”

The agency urged that a more ample and reasonably priced supply of sugar should be accessible on the market once the majority of the sugar mills run at full capacity.

The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) and the Department of Agriculture will work together to begin selling sugar at P70 per kilo at the SRA offices in Quezon City and Bacolod City. To make sugar more inexpensive and available to customers, Kadiwa rolling stores and Kadiwa on Wheels will both sell it at the same price, according to the DA-SRA.

Additionally, Kadiwa and SRA offices will sell imported sugar.

“The DA-SRA has requested that each importer commit 10% of their imported sugar allocation under the Sugar Importation Policy for Crop Year 2022-2023 to be sold through DA and at P70/kilo to have a plentiful supply of reasonably priced sugar,” it continued.

Refined sugar prices in Metro Manila increased to PHP105/kg on Monday from PHP100/kg last Friday, washed sugar prices remained the same at PHP90/kg, while brown sugar decreased from PHP88 last Friday to PHP85.

However, the department was clear that the PHP70/kg sugar was intended for consumers rather than for resellers.

According to DA Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista, the SRA intends to develop an “amenable suggested retail price” for sugar.

This month’s goal date for implementation has been determined as sugar imports catch up to locally increased production.

According to Evangelista, the sooner we can put this into action before November, the more probable it is that we will be able to assist our customers.
