President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. promised to build more Kadiwa stalls across the nation on Wednesday in order to give Filipino customers access to more reasonably priced and high-quality indigenous goods.

This came after Marcos, who also serves as the director of the Department of Agriculture (DA), claimed that the Kadiwa ng Pasko project was a gift to Filipinos ahead of Christmas because it allows them to purchase cheaper staples like rice from the National Food Authority (NFA), which costs just PHP25 per kg.

The President expressed hope that the opening of Kadiwa ng Pasko stores in 14 locations across the country would ease the plight of Filipinos who must bear the brunt of international challenges, such as high inflation and skyrocketing oil prices, in a speech given at Barangay Addition Hills in Mandaluyong City.

He added, “We will expand this to ensure national coverage. In addition, it will continue until Christmas, even if it is called Kadiwa ng Pasko. We will not halt it.”

Marcos visited the Kadiwa booths during the event, which offered regional goods produced by regional farmers and fishermen as well as micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs).

Following his address, the vendors gave Marcos a number of gifts, including many pairs of Seacrest shoes made in Marikina.

He praised the Kadiwa caravan participants and hoped the project would help local suppliers and customers.

Marcos reaffirmed his intention to lower the cost of rice to around PHP 20 per kg. is close at hand already.

However, he acknowledged that it would take some time for his idea to materialize.

“We are almost there to meet our target to cut the price (of rice) to PHP20. But we have to do things carefully. We will be able to reach that goal,” Marcos said. “Palapit na tayo doon sa aking pangarap na mag-PHP20 but dahan-dahan naman.”

For the time being, he said, Filipinos can buy cheaper rice in Kadiwa stores.

The Kadiwa ng Pasko project, a President’s Office program led by the DA, aims to promote reasonably priced, high-quality goods.

The program was started to combat Christmas-related price increases and inflation.

It offers a direct farm-to-consumer food supply chain that helps local agricultural producers earn more money by removing multiple marketing intermediaries.

In collaboration with the departments of trade, interior, and local government, social welfare, and labor, the Kadiwa ng Pasko caravan is being put into action.

Nationwide, 14 Kadiwa outlets opened; 11 were in Metro Manila, one each in Tacloban City, Davao de Oro, and Koronadal City in South Cotabato.

First Lady Louise “Liza” Araneta-Marcos, presidential son Joseph Simon Marcos, and Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Ferdinand Alexander “Sandro” Marcos III oversaw the official opening of the Kadiwa ng Pasko project at Paranaque City, Quezon City, and San Juan City, respectively.

The opening of Kadiwa stores in Makati City, Presidential Management Staff Secretary Zenaida Angping in Pasay City, Social Welfare Secretary Erwin Tulfo in Valenzuela City, and Office of the Press Secretary Undersecretary Emerald Ridao in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City were all attended by Secretary Antonio Lagdameo Jr., Special Assistant to the President.
