In Assam, a state in northeastern India, a significant crackdown against underage weddings has resulted in the arrest of more than 1,800 people, an official said on Friday.

Last month, the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led state government of Assam made the decision to punish men who wed women under the legal marriage age of 18.

Sarma stated in a tweet that Assam state officials have been ordered to “act with a spirit of zero tolerance against the unpardonable and horrific crime on women” and that arrests are being made around the state.

He had previously stated that the government will initially concentrate on the 4,000 underage marriage instances that had been reported in the state during the previous nine days.
The investigation will also target Muslim and Hindu clerics who performed underage marriages, according to Sarma.

The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act governs cases involving girls between the ages of 14 and 18, while the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act governs cases involving girls under the age of 14.

A government poll conducted in 2019 found that 12 percent of Assamese girls had given birth by the age of 18, compared to roughly 32% of girls who were married before turning 18.

The greatest percentage of child marriages in the nation was discovered to be in the eastern state of West Bengal, at 41.6%.

According to Rajib Sharma, director of the Global Organization for Life Development, an NGO located in the state, child weddings are “more of a societal habit in Assam.”

He told Anadolu, “Tribal groups, tribes, and minorities dominate us, and they marry their daughters at a young age.

Early marriages in Assam are also caused by poverty, ignorance, and a lack of government intervention, he continued.
