The lawmakers’ proposal to extend the deadline for submitting Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) for the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections is being examined by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). (BSKE).

In a statement released on Tuesday, Comelec spokesman John Rex Laudiangco said, “As previously indicated by Chairman George Erwin Garcia, based on the statement of Senator Francis Tolentino and other honorable legislators, the full Commission en banc is now reviewing this situation.

In addition to proposals to move the COC filing period closer to the election on October 30 and the beginning of the election season, where a prohibition on specific activities would go into force, Laudiangco stated that the poll body is “weighing the importance of earlier preparations.”

The announcement followed Tolentino’s request to the Comelec to move the BSKE candidate filing deadline from July to August.

Gus Tambunting, a representative for Paranaque City, also voiced his disapproval of the COC filing deadline being set for the next village and youth elections.

The early submission of COCs, according to Tambunting, would result in a longer campaign or political season, which would cause voter fatigue and apathy.

Resolution No. 10899 of the poll body specifies that the time for filing COCs will be from July 3 to July 7.

George Erwin Garcia, the chairman of the Comelec, has earlier justified the election body’s choice to move up the COC reporting deadline.

He claimed that by taking this action, the poll organization will have enough time to accept and handle disqualification and annoyance claims.
