The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)-Mactan Station reported on Wednesday that it had seen an increase in Cebu’s heat index over the previous few days and warned the populace to avoid spending too much time in the sun because it could lead to heat stroke.

PAGASA-Mactan chief Engr. Alfredo Quiblat Jr. stated in an interview with the media that the office recorded a heat index ranging from 32 to 39 degrees Celsius (°C) this March, with the peak reading of 39 °C being felt on March 25.

PAGASA said that on Monday and Tuesday, Cebu sweltered at 36 and 37 °C.

By April 3, the heat index is predicted to hit 39 °C once more, according to Quiblat, who also refuted a claim that the province had already experienced a heat wave.

A heat index chart provided by the Department of Science and Technology categorizes 39°C as “severe caution,” which may result in heat exhaustion and cramps. If activity is continued, heat stroke may result.

In addition, he cautioned the populace about the high temperatures between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“As much as you can, avoid going outside if you don’t have anything vital to do. Take in a lot of water. Avoid drinking beer, tea, or soft drinks because they will cause you to become dehydrated, advised Quiblat.

The Cebu City government has already set aside PHP200 million to lessen the effects of the El Nio phenomenon on the agricultural sector, as PAGASA reported that there would be a 55% possibility that a dry spell might affect Cebu no later than July.

The Department of Agriculture’s initiative for the 28 agricultural barangays in this upland region, which will help 12,000 farmers, will be funded by the budget.

The Cebu City Council adopted a resolution on Tuesday proclaiming a state of readiness for any potential effects the dry season may have on city residents.
