DA guarantees adequate rice supplies despite the El Nino threat.

Despite the potential effects of El Nino, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has assured the nation that there will be enough rice supply for the remainder of the year.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) has published data on rice production expectations. The overall rice supply is predicted to be 9.109 million metric tonnes (MT) for the year’s first half.

This comprises 2.062 million MT of imports, 5.197 million MT of domestic output, and 1.850 million MT of commencing stock.

Meanwhile, total demand is anticipated to amount to 6.990 million MT.

According to the data, the first half’s ending stock was 2.119 million metric tonnes or 57 days’ worth.

“Rice output for the remainder of the year, including July and August, is not included. It also excludes import arrivals after June, DA Undersecretary Leocadio Sebastian said on Sunday, according to the Philippine News Agency.

In light of these two pieces of information, he concluded, “We will have enough rice supply for the year as well as ending supply into 2024.”

According to Sebastian, remote sensing data from the Philippine Rice Information System (PRiSM) was used to predict production for the first semester.

“For the first semester, we generated a conservative production estimate of the same level as last year and based it on our current PRiSM-remote sensing estimate. However, due to our pleasant, sunny weather during the cropping season, we anticipate that this year’s yield will be higher.

Sebastian assured that many steps are being taken to lessen the effects of El Nino.

These include changing the planting schedule, fixing irrigation canals, and installing water pumps.
